Veteran journalist and KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has officially declared his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, promising to tackle corruption, dismantle cartels and restore integrity in the management of the capital.
Speaking during an interview on the evening of Sunday, July 12, Gachoka said his decision to seek the city’s top seat comes after years of observing Nairobi’s governance challenges, arguing that the county requires leadership focused on accountability rather than politics.
“After years of observing the challenges facing Nairobi, I have come to the conclusion that what the city needs is accountable leadership, not politics,” Gachoka said.
The KANU spokesperson disclosed that before announcing his candidature, he held discussions with several political leaders, including KANU chairman Gideon Moi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying the consultations formed part of his efforts to build broad political support.
He added, “I have talked to Gachagua. As far as I am concerned, in the absence of Rigathi blocking me, I have the majority of the support of other coalition partners and principals. From what I have heard from Gachagua and his people, they think I am the right man for Nairobi,” he said.
Gachoka said he believes coalition politics will once again determine the outcome of the Nairobi gubernatorial race, adding that no single candidate can win the city without support from multiple voting blocs.
The former journalist pledged to fight corruption at City Hall by
ensuring transparent use of public funds and greater accountability in county government. He said integrity should begin during political campaigns, promising Nairobi residents an administration free from corruption and misuse of public resources.
Gachoka joins a growing list of politicians who have publicly declared or signalled their intention to vie for the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the country’s most competitive county races.
Among the biggest names who have already thrown their hats into the ring are Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri.
Former senior government adviser Moses Kuria also declared interest, while businesswoman Agnes Kagure indicated she will make another stab at the seat after her unsuccessful 2022 bid.
Incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja is also widely expected to seek a second term, although he is yet to formally launch his re-election campaign.
Gachoka has been active in Kenya’s media and public affairs for more than 25 years, building a reputation as a political analyst and governance commentator. He currently serves as the spokesperson of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), marking his latest move into elective politics with his bid for City Hall-Kenyans.co.ke.
