IEBC Orders Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria to Appear Over Voter Bribery Allegations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has ordered Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria to appear before it by 1 pm on Monday, July 13, after he failed to honour an initial summon.

While giving the orders, the IEBC’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee declined to proceed with the grilling after Gikaria sent a representative to the committee instead of appearing in person.

According to the commission, Gikaria’s representative, Joseph Mirima, failed to provide key documents required to support the request for the MP to be excused.

IEBC is seeking to grill the lawmaker over the bribery allegations that he is linked to.

The representative had told the committee that the MP had sought more time on medical grounds and that the doctor’s letter had been sent via email, but he did not have the document with him.

The committee challenged the preparedness of the MP’s office, questioning why the representative did not have access to the email or supporting documents despite appearing before the panel on Gikaria’s behalf.

The fresh orders come three days after the commission ordered Gikaria to appear before it on Monday, after he was linked to voter bribery claims.

This was after Gikaria openly admitted to distributing Ksh1.2 million to crowds during a political rally in Ol Kalou, stating that his team was allocated money to share within designated wards in the area.

Muhia was also ordered to issue a public apology, with the commission warning that failure to comply with its directives could see her barred from participating in future elections-Kenyans.co.ke.
